What makes a hand hard

A hard hand either contains no Ace at all, or contains an Ace that can only be counted as 1 without busting. A 10-7 is a hard 17. Hard 8 and below

These totals can never bust on the next card — even drawing a 10-value card only brings a hard 8 up to 18. Basic strategy hits every hard total of 8 or below against every dealer upcard, without exception.
